Expressing Your Breastmilk

Most women do not need to use a breast pump if breastfeeding is going well.

You may express your breastmilk:

  • To have breastmilk available when you are away from your baby

  • If your breasts are too hard for your baby to latch onto properly

  • If you need to increase your breastmilk supply

It takes practice to express your breastmilk.  Do not worry if you only collect small amounts at first.

If your baby is not feeding from your breasts, it is important to express your breastmilk as often as the baby normally feeds to keep up your breastmilk supply.

Most moms would need to express their breastmilk 8 to 10 times in 24 hours if their baby is not feeding from their breasts well.
