Caring For Yourself

Can I diet when I am breastfeeding?

It is best to follow Eating Well with Canada Food Guide.  If you choose to diet, avoid crash or fad diets.  Regular exercise will also help with weight loss.

Breastfeeding will help you lose weight.  Each month, in the first 4 to 6 months after your baby is born, you may lose 1 to 2 pounds.

Can I take medication when I am breastfeeding?

Before you take any medications while you are breastfeeding, check with your doctor, pharmacist or Motherisk (1-877-327-4636,
http://www.motherisk.org/).

This includes medications that you can buy “over-the-counter” without a prescription.
